Health and safety is often nowhere to be seen in Hong Kong. I took this photo out of the window of our previous apartment, which looked out onto the building on the other side of the street. We were 5 floors up. As you can see, this maintenance contractor is sitting on the ledge above a window, erecting some bamboo scaffolding around the window above. This scaffolding is usually used if the window is being replaced, or other work is carried out on the outside of a building. As you can see, all he has is a loose rope tied to a belt round his waist to catch him if he falls. He’s not even wearing a hard hat! Scary stuff!
