Grab yourself a bargain!

Hi there, thanks so much for reading this blog. Apologies for the lack of posts lately, things have been a little busy recently (I’ll tell you all about it in the next blog post!). However, I have some sad news for you…

I’m closing my Little Koo Etsy shop for the foreseeable future. Well, this might not be sad news for you, but it is a little bit sad for me! I really enjoy jewellery making and I just want to thank you so much to everyone who has bought, commented on, or even just looked at my jewellery. It really means a lot to me. Unfortunately, raising two-year old twins doesn’t leave a lot of time for jewellery making and it’s just not worth my while keeping the shop open for now. I do plan to come back to it in a year or two though, so keep your eyes peeled!

In the meantime, I’m having a massive closing down sale! 40% off everything! So if there was anything that you had your eye on and were thinking about buying, you now have the chance to get it at a great discount. But you need to be quick because this sale lasts until midnight on 17th November.

Little Koo Birthday sale now on!

So, it was my birthday last week. It was a fairly low key one (I think they tend to take a back seat when you have children, especially when their birthday happens to be quite close to yours – the twins’ 2nd birthday is coming up soon – eek!) but nice nonetheless. And I meant to have a little sale to celebrate on the Little Koo Etsy shop, but I forgot. So I thought I’d have one anyway, just a bit late!

So here it is, the Little Koo birthday sale is now on! 20% off EVERYTHING, including items already on sale! The sale runs until midnight on Monday 12th October so check it out now!

Custom delicate beaded wedding bracelets

My sister in law (whose wedding I mentioned in my last post) very kindly asked me to create two bracelets for her wedding – one for her and one for my other sister in law, who was a bridesmaid. The bridesmaid’s dress was a mid blue colour so I played around with a few designs on a blue theme and this was the one that she chose!

Blue crystal and pearl bracelet

(It was my favourite too, so I was really pleased)

These bracelets are really delicate, made from clusters of crystals, pearls and seed beads. I just love the look of tiny beads clustered together at the moment, as I mentioned here.

Blue crystal cluster bracelet

The bride’s bracelet had light blue crystals, and the bridesmaid’s bracelet had mid-blue crystals to match her dress. The beads are threaded onto two pieces of flexible beading wire, with some of the beads going through both wires to create a woven look.

The bracelets got lots of compliments on the big day, I was so pleased! I was so happy with how they came out, I think I might make one for myself…

New clustered beads necklaces

I’ve got a thing about clusters of small beads at the moment – I just think they look so pretty! If you remember, I made some Christmas decorations which were rings of clustered beads last year. I’ve been working on and off on some necklaces using this clustered bead technique for ages, and I’ve finally got them up in the Little Koo Etsy shop!

The central part of each necklace is made from small beads wrapped around a stiff wire semi-circle, hung on a sterling silver chain. These designs have a little sparkle from the clear Swarovski crystals interspersed with pearls, gemstones and tiny gold seed bead accents. So far, this necklace is available in two colours – mint green and pale pink. The mint green design features amazonite beads, while the pale pink design uses strawberry quartz.

The amazonite necklace can be found here

…while the strawberry quartz necklace can be found here.

I’m thinking of making some earrings to match, so watch this space!

What do you think? Is this a style that you like too? Would you like to see this design in a different colour?

Custom handmade jewellery designs

One of the nicest things about making jewellery is when I get asked to make something specific for someone! I love doing custom designs. And I’ve been lucky enough to have been asked to create two of them recently.

The first was a very open brief – a friend wanted something fairly simple in style, but it had to be purple! I decided to make a bracelet from some beautiful purple swirled glass beads that I have. I bought some lilac Swarovski crystal bicones to match and pulled the design together with some silver spacer beads. The overall look is quite a slim bracelet design, which I chose because it is pretty but not too flashy.

The second was a little more specific. I was asked to create a two layer necklace using some beautiful flat teardrop shaped lapis lazuli beads that had already been picked out. I played with a few designs and decided that the lapis lazuli matched well with some blue goldstone beads that I already had. I wanted the beads to be fairly spaced out so that the necklace didn’t look too heavy so I linked the beads together with wire wrapped loops. This took me quite a long time! I’m not sure whether I’d make another necklace like it again due to the time it took, but I was really pleased with the result.

Luckily, both people loved their new jewellery!

It’s so much fun to design something for someone specific. If you’d like me to design you (or someone you know) a piece of jewellery, just get in touch. The best way is to email me at littlekoojewellery@gmail.com. I’d love to hear your requirements and work with you to produce a beautiful piece of jewellery.

Christmas is coming for Little Koo!

Wow, it seems too early to be talking about Christmas! I’m not one of those super-organised people who buys all those presents in September, in fact, I choose to leave Christmas present shopping and all other Christmas-related activities until December has started.

Unfortunately, I’m hoping that you are not like me!

You see, the last guaranteed international posting date for delivery by Christmas is 2nd December. So, I really hope you’ll start thinking about buying your Christmas presents in November this year!

So, in order to tempt you into starting to plan early, I have two incentives.

Firstly, anyone who signs up to receive Little Koo News in November, or who is an existing subscriber, will receive a code for free international shipping up until 2nd December.

Little Koo News is a monthly update on what’s going on with Little Koo jewellery, including regular discounts, and a roundup of the month’s top blog posts. Click here to take a look at last month’s issue to get a flavour of what it’s like.

Plus, I forgot to mention that all new subscribers go into a draw to win a pair of Little Koo earrings of their choice!

Secondly, I’ve been working hard on some new designs, including a range of Christmas tree decorations! These will be going into the Little Koo Etsy shop in the next few weeks and I’ll be showing off my new designs on this blog over the next few weeks too. I hope you like them! Here’s a sneak peek at one of the new designs:

So has that tempted you to start your Christmas shopping early? Or maybe you’re already well under way, in which case I hope I’ve diverted your plans to include browsing some pretty jewellery! Either way, please take a look at the Little Koo Etsy shop. Remember, I am very flexible and would love to discuss any requirements you have, be it size, colour or a totally new design!

Running a small business

I thought of writing a post on how I’m finding running a small business a while ago, and was undecided for a long time about whether to actually write it or not. But I wanted to be honest with you all, so here it is. I hope you’ll forgive the slightly negative tone.

Negative tone? So things aren’t going well? Well, to be honest, I really shouldn’t complain. After doing my taxes a couple of months ago, I realised that I made a small profit in the last financial year (despite having spent a small fortune on supplies). I get a slow but steady stream of views on my Etsy shop and a few people favourite my designs. I have some lovely friends who keep buying my jewellery and I’ve made a few sales from people I’ve met through this blog.

Thank you to everyone who reads this blog and looks at my Etsy shop by the way. Thank you even more to all the lovely people who actually buy my jewellery!

Little Koo - Cushion style earrings

I just got a bit downhearted after making very little (if any) profit from the last few craft shows I’ve done. Although, to be fair, the weather at two of them was horrendous. So I’m having a little break from craft fairs for a while. I just don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or if it’s just that the people at the craft fairs weren’t looking for my style of jewellery. Is my style of jewellery the problem? Is it my display style? My prices? My own demeanour? (I find it very hard to know how to interact with people at these things!)

Little Koo craft fair stall

And then in between the craft fairs it’s not a lot better. And I think a lot of it is the fact that I just have very little time for the business these days. I’m lucky if I spend a couple of hours on it a week. I read all these articles about setting goals and how to improve certain areas of my business, but I just don’t have time to do the work required.

I do worry that the jewellery itself isn’t good enough either. One thing a lot of these articles tell me is that I need to have a target audience in mind when designing and marketing, and to be honest, I don’t really know what that is. Women with similar taste in jewellery to me? Is that good enough?! I just make things that I think look pretty, but I don’t know how to reach people with the same taste as me. Or should I try and follow more of the fashion trends?

handmade sterling silver charm bracelet - shell

To be honest, I thought about jacking it all in and making something completely different. Mobiles for children’s bedrooms! I really like the one I made before and I have some ideas of what I could do for different designs. But then I get real and realise the amount of work it would take to even just get ready to launch a new business, and remember that I just don’t have the time.

Moravian star mobile

So anyway, running a small business is hard and I’m certainly not going to make a living off mine any time soon. But I’ll keep going with it and have fun making new jewellery designs. I’d love to hear from anyone else who runs a small business and how they are finding it. And also any tips on how I can improve mine!
